Lou is the single sock who ran away from the washing machine. Ever since, he's been living a perfectly normal week in Germany. Every pair tells one chapter of his week, and whoever wears it tells it on.
A small picture on the left sock: the moment everyone knows.
The sentence on the right sock, embroidered. The setup in bold, the punchline in script.
On the paper band around every pair: the whole chapter, to read and pass on.
Every pair is a chapter. The scene on the left, the punchline on the right, and the story travels along on the paper band.
40 degrees, 1200 spins. After that, Lou was on his own. He didn't go looking for the other one. He started living.
For the day after. After the breakup, or the wash cycle.
6:45, the alarm goes off for the third time. Lou gets up, but only on principle. Monday is allowed to watch.
For every Monday. No exceptions.
7:42, platform 3. The board flips: train cancelled. Everyone sighs. Not Lou. He just starts walking.
For commuting days and strike days.
Midweek, third coffee. The eyes say tired. The outfit says something else entirely.
For the third coffee before ten.
Thursday, 3:30 pm. Lou isn't looking at the clock. He's looking into the future. It looks a lot like Friday.
For Thursdays that feel like Mondays.
The body sits in the office until 5 pm. The head has been in the beer garden since 9:00. Lou goes with his head.
For Fridays from 9:01.
Saturday, 11:10 pm. The queue is long, the music too loud. Lou walks in anyway, like it's his film.
For nights you'll want to tell people about.
Sunday, 10 am. The city is still asleep, yesterday's bottles aren't. Lou collects. 25 cents is 25 cents.
For the walk the morning after.
